Hello.

Welcome to the photography of Robert Mackinlay. I would like to share with you my latest passionate pursuit: revealing the beauty of Yosemite Valley and how it is transformed by water.

What I Do

It seems that I have always had a heightened awareness for color, form, patterns and the play of light. Studying art history at Colorado College helped focus my visual palette and put my photography into a historical context.

Who I Am

I have had many hats in the world of photography: as assistant to photographer Galen Rowell, Photo Editor at The North Face, Freelance Magazine Photographer with assignments from Tibet to Turkey. My focus now is closer to home; the landscapes of California.

My Work

In this portfolio I have returned to Yosemite to explore the aesthetic qualities of water in its varied forms. The presence of water can be captured in many ways, from scenes of grand waterfalls, to the silky blur of the Merced River. Water can be snow and ice or even the mist combing through the trees. Few elements on earth contain such magic.
